Mercedes has decided not to use the ADUO engine upgrade at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, instead waiting until October to introduce the updated power unit. Kimi Antonelli, the Italian driver, will receive a new but un-upgraded engine at Monza, forcing him to start from the back of the grid. The team chose Monza because it is one of the easiest circuits to overtake, minimizing the penalty's damage. Antonelli has already used four ICEs (internal combustion engines) this season, more than expected due to reliability issues. Teammate George Russell has the same count but retains a larger pool due to fewer failures. Mercedes projects each driver will need six engines for the season, leading to further grid penalties.
