China-EU Table Tennis Friendly in Brussels: Legends as Diplomatic Envoys

On the afternoon of August 13, 2026, a special sports event took place at the Royal Alpa Table Tennis Club in Brussels: a table tennis friendly between China and the European Union. Not highly competitive, Chinese and European players were divided into six mixed teams of four, competing together in a friendly atmosphere. The event was hosted by the Mission of China to the EU, with the presence of European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) Vice President Didier Leroy, Secretary General Pierre Kass, and Chinese Ambassador to the EU Cai Run. Notably, two table tennis legends - Yan Sen, Olympic and World Champion, and Zhang Yining, former world No. 1 - attended as honorary guests. Both are currently associated with the China Table Tennis College and its European branch, CTTC Europe. Despite being an exchange activity, the presence of such prominent figures conveys a message: table tennis is both a competitive sport and a bridge for culture and diplomacy. Didier Leroy stressed that the event aimed to 'strengthen friendship, dialogue and mutual understanding between China and Europe.' This recalls the tradition of 'ping-pong diplomacy' in the history of international relations. From a professional perspective, this goes beyond a mere sports exchange. CTTC Europe is gradually establishing its presence in Europe. Sending legendary champions as brand ambassadors may mark the beginning of deeper training cooperation programs. For many European countries, this is an opportunity to access world-class coaching methods; however, some voices express concern about China's growing influence in European table tennis. The lesson for Vietnamese table tennis from the Brussels story is that success comes from both individual training and international cooperation strategies as well as long-term brand building. As major table tennis nations expand their influence, proactive integration and learning will be key to staying competitive.
